PEOPLE OF COLOR | diverse recommendations

I recently started a series, where I recommend diverse books. I started out by posting about two books with LGBT+ protagonists. Today I’m going to share two books which represent people of color.

The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon

This book is about a Natascha and Daniel meeting and spending one day together in New York. It is very quick, cute and a little instalovey (in a kinda good way), but it also dwells on the more serious topic of different cultures meeting and struggling with identity. Daniel was born in America, but has an asian family and background. Natasha has lived the majority of her life in America, but was born in Jamaica and is, when the story starts, close to being deported back with her family.

Daniel and Natasha discusses identity and people constatnly asking where they are from. It was a really nice read, and I’d definitely recommend it.

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

Eleanor and Park is a love story between the two. It doesn’t have the same kind of identity discussion as The Sun is Also a Star, but Park is half Korean, and struggles a lot with being the only asian-looking kid at school. He has a hard time with people assuming he fits into some Korean stereotype, which he doesn’t feel like he understands nor fits into.

This is the love story of two misfits, it is cute and heartbreaking, overall a really good book.

That was all my POC recommendations for right now. I also recently posted about racism in the US, which has book recommendations with a similar topic, so go check that out as well! And if you have any recommendations, let me know!
