MORE HAPPY THAN NOT

more-happy-than-not.jpg‘More Happy Than Not’ by Adam Silvera, published by Soho Teen, 2015, 4/5 stars – thanks to the publisher Gyldendal for giving me the Danish edition of this book! You can buy it here.

Before you read this review, know that this book contains trigger warnings against: depression, suicide and abuse

More Happy than Not was a lot harder to read than I had expected. The book starts out entertaining and all cutesy. At some point you (really meaning me) might be fooled to think this is just another light contemporary teenage book, but that is so far from what this really is.

More Happy than Not follows 16-year-old Aaron, right after his father’s suicide and his own failed attempt at one. He lives in a poor neighborhood in New York and shares room with both his mother and brother. The family, and especially Aaron, are now dealing with the sorrow and consequences after the tragic events. When Aaron’s girlfriend, Genevieve, leaves for an art camp for three weeks he spends all his time with his new friend Thomas. Thomas makes him feel safe and happy, but their relationships slowly starts to get confusing and tense. However, being gay is scary in the community and friend-group Aaron is in, and it is not socially accepted to be anything but a ‘real’ man.

This book is very dark and makes you face a lot of the ugliness in this world, you often try to forget is there. I still feel overwhelmed by how brilliant and heartbreaking this story was, and I will very highly encourage everyone to read it.

Even though this book deals with so difficult topics, it is written in a very light-hearted and easy way. It brought the problems down to earth, without it ever feeling glamorized or disrespectful. Adam’s humor also shines through, which was something I really enjoyed.

This book is a ton of things at once. I struggled when writing my synopsis of it, because this is so far from being a simple story. So many different issues are brought up, and the cast of characters are probably the most diverse I have known to date. But while all these things easily could have become too much, Adam delivers it amazingly. Adam fully succeeds at telling this story, and he also totally succeeded at making me sob. A lot.

This book blew me away, and I will recommend it to everyone ever. I will now go cry in in my room of the sadness and beauty that is this book.

Du kunne ikke have mindre ret.

Han bor i et fattigt område i New York and deler værelse med både hans mor or bror.
