‘Everything Everything’ by Nicola Yoon, published by Delacorte Books for Young Readers, 2015, 3/5 stars – thanks to the publisher Carlsen for giving me the Danish edition of this book! You can buy it here.

Everything Everything follows Maddie, who suffers from an incurable disease which means she’s basically allergic to the world. She can’t leave her house and lives there alone with her mom. One day a new family next door moves in, including a boy called Olly. They slowly start to contact each other and Maddie experiences her first relationship with a person her age.

This book was exactly what I wanted and expected it to be. Quick and cute. I started it after not having read anything for a very long time, and I read the whole thing in one sitting.

I enjoyed Maddie as a character and I loved watching her experiencing having a friend and flirt and getting to know the world outside a little bit more. The book also touched on the question, what makes life worth living, and if it is a real life to live locked up in a house like that.

It was a little shallow, but I didn’t expect anything else. It was what I needed and wanted it to be. The only rather disappointed thing was the ending. I did not like it at all and really felt like it was a cheap solution for the author, it didn’t feel believable. I would recommend it if you need something fun, cute and quick. I give it 3/5 stars.

Looking back on it now, I see how poor the ending was, and how it was—as you said—a cheap ending. It could have been much more complex! I still love the book as a whole, it’s just a shame about the ending.
