A Monster Calls follows the 13-year-old boy Connor. His mom is sick with cancer and he is having a hard time at school. One night a monster visits him and starts telling him stories. The monster becomes Conor’s only firm supporter through his mothers illness, and I really liked seeing their relationship develop.

Connor is a really strong child. He is facing all of this pain alone, and the monster is his only friend. I spent this book feeling really bad for Conor, but at the same time being very impressed with him. Even though he is going through all of this shit, he is still able to wake up every morning and go to school. His relationship with his mom is strong, she really understands him, but her illness drifts them apart a little bit.

Ness is really good at writing about the emotional things Conor goes through. He completely avoids getting all sentimental, and faces things raw and strong, which hit you right in the feels.

Another great aspect of this book were the illustrations. From the moment I heard Jim Kay was the illustrator I knew it was going to be good  and it was. The illustrations are so beautiful, and they contributed with so much to the story. I liked how they are only painted with black/white. It both fit the story’s atmosphere and it also left the visual details to the imagination.

This book was overall just purely amazing. It is a really powerful and moving story, and I would highly recommend it to you all! The movie adaptation of it is out in December, but I got to watch it early, so keep your eyes out for a review on that soon!
