This book builds on the ideo of telling the story from a normal persons perspective in a Chosen One’s-world. We follow Mikey, a senior in high school who is focused on graduating and getting guts enough to tell Henna, how in love with her he is. Even though we do hear about some fantastical elements, I do consider this a contemporary.

I think that the idea of this premise sounds cooler than the actual story made it to be. Each chapter started with a little blurb of what the Chosen One’s were up to. It was filled with a lot of common tropes, and I really liked the way it made fun of it. Besides that, I think the small parts during the story which were about the Chosen Ones (or the indie-kids as they’re called) just seemed uninteresting.

The strongest aspect of this book were for sure the characters. I really appreciated how diverse they were and it was thanks to them that I was kept interested in the story. This was more focused on friendships and family relationships instead of a romantic ones, which was so nice to see. Some relationships worth mentioning is the strong bond between Mikey and his best friend Jared, and the dynamic in Mikey’s family. I think strong male friendships aren’t shown often enough in literature, and this one was for sure amazing. Then we have a very interesting family dynamic. Mikey has a very busy mother and a very distant father, which means Mikey and his sister Mel felt a great responsibility for their 10-year old sister. It was done very well, and I think more authors need to start including different family situations in their novels.

There were some slow parts in this book, and the Chosen Ones stories were irrelevant to hear about at many points, but it were filled with wonderful and diverse characters that has left an impact on me. I give this book 3/5 stars.

Aww, I’m sorry this book didn’t execute as well as it seemed to have promised! It seems like it could be a really great read its a shame you didn’t enjoy it too much! I’ve only ever read two Patrick Ness books and I think I’ll give some others a chance before I start this one! Great review! 🙂
